Agave isthmensis 'Ohi Raijin' is a highly sought-after, variegated cultivar of the Dwarf Butterfly Agave, native to Oaxaca, Mexico. Its name, 'Ohi Raijin,' is inspired by Japanese folklore, evoking the image of Raijin, the god of thunder and storms, perhaps referring to the plant's striking patterns. It's known for its compact size, unique leaf texture, and attractive variegation.
* Toxicity: The sap of this agave may cause skin irritation, so it's best to wear gloves when handling. It is also toxic to humans and pets.
Care Guide:
* Light: Provide bright, indirect light to some direct sunlight. Protect it from intense afternoon sun, which can cause leaf burn, especially for the variegated portions.
* Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) and significantly reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant is dormant. Overwatering is a common cause of root rot.
* Soil: Use a well-draining cactus and succulent potting mix. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating.
* Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 64-75°F (18-24°C) for optimal growth. It is cold-sensitive and should be protected from frost. In colder climates, it's best grown in containers and brought indoors during winter.
* Humidity: Thrives in average household humidity levels and doesn't require special humidity considerations.
* Potting: Repot every 2-3 years in spring, choosing a slightly larger container each time.
* Planting: Plant the callused offset in a well-draining cactus/succulent potting mix, ensuring the root ball is slightly below the soil surface
.
* Watering: Water sparingly until the offset establishes roots.
